The building on the corner of Kina'u and Maikiki sat unoccupied for a long time, but the building and its grounds never aged.
The grass was always manicured, and the plants and trees never seemed to grow beyond their capacity. Mormon missionaries who lived in the apartment across the street refused to stay in the rooms facing the building, claiming they could see shadows roaming about inside who didn't appear to be corporeal. It made sense, seeing as how the parking lot to the building was gated shut. Who could be there? A mom-and-pop store was on the west corner across the street building. Above the store was a crack house. One day, a local couple who dealt out of the apartment sat outside on their beach chairs and noticed the gate to the parking lot across the street was wide open. A white Dodge SUV sat in the lot with the windows rolled up. In it sat a middle-aged Hawaiian man who was neatly dressed by the looks of him. The local couple assumed he was a cop, so they sent their security over to talk to the man. Armed with a large knife, the security ambled down the stairs, walked across the street and entered the parking lot. The massive gates swung shut behind the security. The heavy chains and large lock that were not there previously suddenly manifested on the gate, fully secured. The local ran down the stairs, across the street, and hurriedly claimed the gate. To their surprise, the parking lot was empty. The SUV and their security were gone. The building is still there today. Exxcept, it's disguised as an indoor kids' playground. Some people go in, some people come out. Some don't.
