WOMAN AT THE DOOR

Saturday, August 1, 1981

Our little cul de sac of a neighborhood was a fire with the sounds of something new and astounding that premiered on national television. Little did we know
that we had entered into the age of brainwashing by a thing called music videos on a fledgling station know as MTV or Music Television Videos. My brother and I were at home that afternoon, the house was on the edge of the last sweltering atmosphere of the day and the oncoming evening. Our living room had one of those ancient industrial ceiling fans that you would normally see in the older hospitals or state buildings.  Barry and I sat directly beneath the whirling piece of machinery so that we could absorb all the cool air we could stand. The television set was less than a foot away from where we were sitting and if we looked to the left, we'd be staring out the front door. We waited with excited anticipation because our favorite band's music video was up next  My brother was mesmerized when the image of Dennis Deyoung appeared on the screen, he was lit by a single spotlight sitting in front of his piano. I happened to glance out the front door and saw an old Hawaiian woman in a long white mu'umu'u standing at our front door, she waved at me with a slight smile and I got up from my chair to see what she wanted.

"Tonight's the night we'll make history, honey you and I
'cause I'll take any risk to tie back the hands of time and
stay with you here tonight..."

The old Hawaiian woman didn't say anything, she only smiled and gave me a short wave of her hand and turned down the stairs to leave. I called after her to see if there was anything that she needed, there was no response. It was all very strange, right then I turned around and walked over to join Barry when a terrible creaking noise came from the ceiling fan above him.

"I know you feel, these are the worst of times
I do believe its true when people lock their doors
and hide inside, rumor has it it's the end of paradise..."

The Contraption came off of its screws and fell right on top of my older brother, killing him instantly. Just then I heard a horrible hissing sound behind me, it was the old Hawaiian woman, she was back again, except this time there was only the top half of her standing at the front door. She just floated there with no bottom half to speak of. "Dammit, that was supposed to be you, not your brother. Shit."
